I’m planning on going to Maui, Hawaii from July 28th to August 28th, I’m going on a conservation trip to volunteer with Maui wildlife fund, to help preserve and protect Hawksbill turtles and their coral reef ecosystem, which is in ever need of protection. I will be working everyday on the beaches of Maui to help set up nest for the turtles, coach young hatchlings back into the sea, guard the hatchling from poachers and also set up defences so that there is a maximum chance of them reaching the sea. I’m going to be studying the turtles and their environments along with the ecology of coral reefs with leading marine biologists, Bill Gilmartin, Hannah Bernard and Cheryl King. I’m hoping that I can one day become a marine biologist and help to protect Sea turtles in the coral reef ecosystem.
If I were to win the award I would use the money for equitment to take with me over there, or I would put it towards the money I have already raised which I would use to pay for my plane ticket. Any money which I have left over from my fund raising or from the award I will donate to the project, as I want to help in anyway I can.
The reason I am applying for the award is because it have taken me 6 months to fund raise money for my ticket and accommodation and I will still be fund raising through the year to ensure that I can do all I can to help whilst I’m over there. I think I would be stupid to miss the opportunity I have been offered and I think that I will have a great impact on the Hawksbill turtle population of Maui, and I feel that I could make a real difference and help to protect the coral reef and all the species who inhabit it.
